This was written with a good bit of irony. Trump’s wall is a symbol of how many Americans are building a wall around their hearts and their feelings. The poet suggests that such a wall, meant to keep others out, may actually be a wall that keeps people in, away from the rest of the world, a prison of their own making. This wall is one in American’s hearts, not the wall on the southern border.
This poem disturbs people, and that is the poet's intent. It points out a deeper meaning behind them, a meaning that brings out hatred and isolation, distrust and paranoia. The poet uses Trump’s ideas as metaphors to point out the deeper meaning as well as to satirize Trump.
