我 I

I

Under the pale ceramic walls, our bathtub
was mixed with long hair and bath foam
my woman moved her curvy body
in the soap water
forward and back
forward and back
she looked at me
with her hazy green eyes
and raised her perfume-smelled
soft hand
toward me

Slapped by her flesh
I bumped into the cold indifferent wall
I felt a crash in my body
like striking by the lightning
like tearing into pieces
like melting in hot air
I fell into the water
soaked in blood
bittersweetly looking at her
severe face from beneath

I am a mosquito
who has incontestably fallen in love
with the owner of the house.

The poem begins erotically, creating a mystery that a man has entered the bathroom while this beautiful woman is bathing, and that she will reach out and invite him to her bath, to make love.

Then, in the very next verse, it shocks with sudden violence! He is hit by that hand, sending him reeling. The dream he is having explodes in violence, he is knocked against the wall, he is bleeding, he falls into the water.

Then, in the last two lines, we find out he is a mosquito. Of course he “fell in love” with her – he was thinking to bite her, to get some blood (this parasitic sucking of blood is heavily eroticized in vampire movies, by the way). Now he has been killed in his romantic pursuit. It is heavily ironic, yet humorous, because the tension is relieved. There is no seduction, or sex, and there is no murder or violence. He is merely a mosquito. An additionally point here is that male mosquitos do not bite – only female mosquitos bite. That adds an extra layer of irony.

This was a very entertaining poem, playing with one’s feelings as it does.

Welcome Cindy to bilingual poetry, hope to see you back!
