In my education of junior and senior hight school, each of my Chinese teacher paid much attention on the final idea which the author wanted to present. In addition, we had to know the author's background to get the idea of his opinion. It was a time of "work" (what Charles mentioned in class), however, as the coming of "text" time, we read in the way of begging and ending as we wish.
